Palo Alto High graduate Jeremy Lin is back in the NBA Development League and flourishing once again, after languishing on the Golden State Warriors’ bench. Since returning to the Reno Bighorns, the Warriors’ affiliate, Lin has taken over the team’s scoring lead with 19.1 points a game in eight appearances.
In his past three games with Reno, Lin has scored 60 points. In his last outing on Sunday in a 109-102 win over Texas, Lin had 17 points with four rebounds and three assists. He’s currently averaging 4.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game with Reno.
Lin was sent by the Warriors to Reno on Jan. 10, his second assignment with the Bighorns. The first came on Dec. 28 and lasted four games before Golden State recalled him. Lin played sparingly on his return and was reassigned to the D League.
He scored 21 points in a 111-102 win over Maine in his first game back on Jan. 12, then tallied 22 points in a 117-93 win over Sioux Falls on Jan. 13 and added 21 against Texas last Saturday in a 108-85 victory by Reno. In his four games since his return, Lin has scored 81 points.
Football
Following the city-wide parade on January 8 to honor the Palo Alto football team and girls’ volleyball squad for their respective state titles in December, a comment was made that this was Palo Alto’s second state football title, not the first. A reader said that Paly defeated Porterville for the 1912 state crown.
That was only partially correct. Palo Alto did beat Porterville in 1912 for a state title, but it was in rugby. Palo Alto played rugby (and no football) from 1907 to 1919. In 1912, Paly went 17-2 (including three forfeits) and defeated Porterville, 11-8, in what was called a state championship.
Rugby, of course, wasn’t as widespread as football even in those years.
Palo Alto rugby actually is in the Cal-Hi Sports state record book for most wins in a season (for rugby), going 17-2 in 1912 and 16-1 in 1913. Those are the all-time records for the sport and will stand the test of time, unless rugby gains popularity again.
Golf
Lou Matteucci and John Geibel both scored aces recently at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Matteucci got his hole in one on the 160-0yard par-3 eighth hole with a hybrid. Geibel used an 8-iron to ace the 145-yard par-3 third hole.
