Sometime during the dark, damp hours between Saturday night and Sunday morning, burglars broke into Lutticken’s Deli in Menlo Park and cleaned out two cash registers.

Employee Jack Gergridge discovered that both doors to the store at 3535 Alameda de las Pulgas were unlocked when he reported to work around 9:45 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 19).

Lt. Ray Lunny of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department said the unknown suspects stole $1,000 to $1,500.

On Monday morning, deli owner Bob Lutticken changed the locks.

  1. Not to criticize Lutticken’s, but I always thought businesses cleared out all their cash for the night. When I ran a cash register we had to deposit all money in the safe or the bank, except for enough to make change the next day – about $50, which isn’t worth burgling. If I were a burglar I’d assume the register was mostly empty. Perhaps these ones knew the business?
