Sophomore Kelsey Lloyd scored a goal in the 44th minute to snap a tie and give 19th-ranked Stanford a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Massachusetts on Tuesday morning in an NCAA Play-In field hockey game, clinching an NCAA Tournament berth for the third time in four seasons.
Lloyd’s tip-in from the corner post came from an assist from Becky Dru. Devon Holman gave Stanford a 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Katie Mitchell in the 14th minute.
Stanford (15-5) had a slight 13-12 edge in shots, while Massachusetts (15-7) had the edge 5-4 in penalty corners.
Alessandra Moss made four saves in goal, lowering her GAA to 1.21.
The Cardinal, on a six-game winning streak, will get a rematch with defending NCAA champion and second-seeded North Carolina (19-2) on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (PST).
Stanford had an RPI rating of 23 entering the game, while the Minutewomen, who also reached the tournament field as an at-large pick, were rated 15th.
Stanford lost at North Carolina, 2-1, earlier in the season. The Cardinal won 10 of its next 12 games, as did the Tar Heels.
Stanford was 2-3 against the NCAA field this year, downing Massachusetts and Wake Forest, while losing to North Carolina, Michigan State and Syracuse.
The Cardinal is 0-9 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
Men’s golf
Stanford takes an 11-stroke lead into the final round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle after shooting 7-under-par 348 as a group Tuesday.
The Cardinal entered the day a stroke behind UCLA for the team lead.
David Chung and Sihwan Kim each shot 3-under 68s and all five Stanford golfers were at par or better on the day.
Cameron Wilson followed with a 1-under 70 and both Steve Ziegler and Andrew Yun were at par.
Football
Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year, Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced Tuesday.
Luck has quarterbacked Stanford to an 8-1 record, the team’s best start since the 1970 season. In nine games, he has completed 175-of-258 passes for 2,213 yards and 22 touchdowns. His 22 touchdowns rank fourth on Stanford’s single-season list, five behind the record held by John Elway (1980) and Steve Stenstrom (1993).
He leads the Pac-10 Conference and ranks seventh nationally in passing efficiency at 163.77 and also tops the conference and ranks 19th nationally in total offense per game (287.0).
A dual-threat, Luck also ranks as Stanford’s second leading rusher with 370 yards on 43 attempts and three touchdowns. His rushing total, which includes two touchdown runs over 50 yards, is the highest in school history by a quarterback.
Women’s basketball
Stanford tri-captains Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Kayla Pedersen and Jeanette Pohlen were all named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced Tuesday.
The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2010-11 college basketball season.
The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 4, 2011 at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind.
The announcement makes Stanford one of just three schools, along with North Carolina and Tennessee, to have three players named to the preseason list.
Men’s swimming
Stanford and California swimming will meet for the first time this season when the Cardinal hosts a tri-distance meet between the two programs on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
The tri-distance meet combines totals between: sprinters (50, 100, 200 free), distance swimmers (200, 500, 1000 free), butterflyers (50, 100, 200 butterfly), breaststrokers (50, 100, 200 breaststroke), backstrokers (50, 100, 200 backstroke) and the individual medley (100, 200, 400 IM).
