Cassidy Lichtman recorded 15 kills and the Stanford women’s volleyball team downed visiting UC Irvine, 25-15, 25-16, 25-18, in a nonconference match Thursday night.
Alix Klineman added 10 kills and 12 digs as the third-ranked Cardinal (4-0) won the first match of the Stanford Invitational.
Stanford hosts Marquette at 2 p.m. Saturday to finish the Invitational.
Karissa Cook recorded 26 assists and 11 digs, while Carly Wopat was 8-of-13 on the attack for a .615 hitting percentage.
Women’s soccer
Natalie Schader recorded eight saves but Menlo College could not muster any offense in dropping a 2-0 decision to host Cal State Monterey Bay in a nonconference match Thursday.
The Otters scored within the first 26 seconds, one of their 16 shots. The Oaks were held without a shot.
Menlo hosts Academy of Art in its home opener next Thursday at 2 p.m.
Sailing
Cardinal Sailing is ranked No. 12 nationally in Sailing World’s fall women’s poll and No. 14 in the coed division entering the season.
Stanford was one of only eight programs last year to compete in all three national championships, after sweeping the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference team, coed and women’s championships in May. Stanford finished 18th at Coed Nationals in June and 13th at the women’s championship that same week.
The Cardinal, which opens up September 24-26 at the PCCSC Singlehanded Championships, return all-conference sailors Hannah Burroughs, Nick Dugdale, Eliza Richartz, and Rebecca King. King was named all-PCCSC for both the women’s and coed divisions.
