The music of the Argentine tango filled the air Thursday night at the Campus for Jewish Life in south Palo Alto. As part of a summer music and dance series, tango instructor Igor Polk taught traditional tango as well as elements from various styles ranging from “salon” to “nuevo.”

Additional events planned for the free “On the Town” series, named after and taking place in the campus’ Jessica L. Saal Town Square, are: African folk songs with Baba Ken Okulolo and the Nigerian Brothers (Saturday, June 26), Israeli folk dancing with Karina Lambert (Thursday, July 22), Jake Oken-Berg and Friends in concert (Saturday, July 31), and folk and theatrical dance with the Firebird Dancers (Sunday, Aug. 22).

The Campus for Jewish Life is located at 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto.

  1. Everyone knows that tango is a wonderful dance. But when you see how Igor Polk is dancing it with his partner Cecilia you just feel how beautiful, passionate, natural and human this dance is! You just want to dance tango – it is impossible to resist this music and movement. And you can try! Right away! And then you discover that Igor is not only a marvellous dancer, but also an excellent teacher, amazing partner and a good man!

  2. It was quite an experience watching Igor and Cecilia showing fantastic Argentine tango dances. According to Igor’s web-blog, Canyenque is a street dance. He also wrote: “Imagine, somewhere in Paris or in San Francisco or in Tokyo you meet a wonderful person. You step into any cafe and dance Argentine Tango. Does not matter what music, what floor, how much space. Everybody including your partner are astonished! This may be a dance of a lifetime you were waiting for. This is The Real Tango.” I appreciated their presenting all different kinds of styles of tango dancing. They are amazing!

  3. How wonderful it is, to be able to see different Argentine tango styles danced in our little town of Palo Alto, inside a Jewish Center…
Igor and Cecilia are wonderful to watch, their passion for the dance is contagious! Igor is such a dedicated aficionado, I am happy everytime he is recognized. Bravo!
