SUNDAY’S MATCH: Christen Press and Kristin Stannard each scored a goal in the first half and the Stanford women’s soccer team defeated UNC Greensboro, 2-0, on Sunday in the Stanford Invitational. Camille Levin and Shira Averbuch each had an assist.
“It was a great weekend with great results,” Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “It was a good tie against UNC, which obviously shows we’re a very strong team, and today’s result was solid as well. We got some players in off the bench and they made a huge difference in the game and helped us win.”
FRIDAY: Kelley O’Hara scored with 3:29 remaining to play in regulation and the No. 3-ranked Stanford women’s soccer team recorded a 1-1 tie with visiting North Carolina on Friday as part of the Stanford Invitational.
The Cardinal (5-0-1) ended a seven-match losing streak to the fifth-ranked Tar Heels and scored its first home goal against them in four matches.
Olympian Tobin Heath scored North Carolina’s goal midway through the first half and was dominating the match until Stanford started pressuring in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Christen Press had four good scoring chances, O’Hara created a couple more and Kristin Stannard nearly snuck one in.
Freshman Teresa Noyola from Palo Alto High had a golden scoring opportunity with less than a minute to play and just missed.
Press and freshman Lindsay Taylor from Castilleja each created chances to score in overtime.
Men’s water polo
SUNDAY: Sage Wright scored four goals and Janson Wigo scored three goals as Stanford wrapped up the Princeton Invitational with a 13-4 win over Brown. Wigo recorded three goals in all five matches as the Cardinal (5-0) prepares for its home opener on Friday against Air Force at 6 p.m.
Drac Wigo scored five goals and Janson Wigo added three as the Stanford men’s water polo team opened its season with an 18-5 victory over Johns Hopkins on Friday in the Princeton Invitational.
The Cardinal plays twice on Saturday, meeting Navy in the morning and playing the host Tigers in the evening.
Gunn High grad Kyle Gertridge has six goals in the Blue Jays’ first five games. Johns Hopkins opened the year ranked second in the nation among Division III schools.
Menlo School grad Jimmie Sandman made his first start in over a year. He played one period, recording a save before giving way to Brian Pingree, who stopped five shots the rest of the way.
Palo Alto High grad Gregor Horstmeyer scored a goal for Princeton, but the Tigers lost to UC San Diego, 11-9, in another game on Friday.
Women’s volleyball
SATURDAY: Alix Klineman had 16 kills and 11 digs as Stanford swept Santa Clara, 25-12, 25-16, 25-15, on the final day of the Stanford Invitational. Klineman was named tournament MVP. Cynthia Barboza and Foluke Akinradewo were also named to the all-tournament team.
Cynthia Barboza recorded 11 kills and 14 digs as Stanford defeated UC Santa Barbara, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21, on Friday in the Stanford Invitational.
Alix Klineman added 13 kills and hit .444 while Foluke Akinradewo added nine kills and hit .421.
“It goes back to losing to St. Louis,” Akinradewo said. “Any team we play, we know they will bring their ‘A’ game and we need to step up our level. Every match we’re trying to do that.”
Libero Gabi Ailes added 11 digs for the Cardinal.
Men’s soccer
Bobby Warsaw scored eight minutes into the second half, with an assist from T.J. Novak, and Stanford beat host USF, 1-0, on Sunday night in a nonconference match.
The Cardinal (2-1-1) hosts Creighton on Friday at 8 p.m.
