Electric vehicle charging station construction projects that are ready to break ground in the Bay Area can receive their share of $30 million in incentive funds, the California Energy Commission announced last week.
In efforts to strengthen the state's EV charging station network, energy officials have allocated funds to shovel-ready projects in 30 counties around the state. Projects in all nine counties of the Bay Area are eligible for funding.
Funds stem from the state's Golden State Priority Project, which is an initiative to expedite fast-charging station infrastructure in low-income and tribal communities.
CEC Commissioner Patty Monahan said the money is meant to "fill the gap" in areas with few places to charge EVs, and ultimately make it easier for all Californians to switch to cleaner transportation.
"This new model is designed to deploy charging infrastructure swiftly and equitably to make sure every EV driver feels confident they can refuel, and that need is especially critical in rural, low-income and tribal communities," said Monahan.
Businesses, community organizations and public entities with construction projects in disadvantaged communities are encouraged to apply by March 10. Site locations can include airports, gas stations, universities, public transit hubs and other places accessible to the public.
Awardees will receive rebates to purchase and install up to 20 fast chargers per site, at $100,000 per connector.
More information on the initiative can be found on the project's webpage at calevip.org.

And where do they think the electricity will come from to do this? Every summer there are power shut offs if it's windy, or told to use less when it is hot!
A large part of the East Bay was without power for many hours yesterday including Oakland airport. Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing? California is not able to supply enough electricity or keep it running for present needs. I happen to like EVs, but we don't have the power to make them take over from gas run vehicles, or for all our heating and cooking needs.

"projects that are ready to break ground" -- we don't have any of those. The only thing we have that is shovel-ready comes out of city hall. And we aren't one of the "rural, low-income and tribal communities" mentioned. "Businesses, community organizations and public entities with construction projects in disadvantaged communities are encouraged to apply by March 10." We talk a lot about hiring consultants to look at prospective projects, but we are not a disadvantaged community. And we can't even start the bidding process to hire the consultant who would evaluate our projects to see if they fit, by March 10. But if there's money being given away, we will find a way to get a piece of it.

An interesting sight yesterday at WalMart, involving the row of chargers and the cars plugged in. Another car pulled up and parked perpendicular to the others and was going from car to car looking at the charger nozzles. There were no available slots. Since I am completely illiterate about EV cars, is there a way that someone can whip the charger out of one car and put it in another? Is there something that shows how much time there is left to charge the occupied cars? If a car is "full" but still parked there, can the nozzle be used by someone else as long as the nozzle can reach? Can the nozzle be removed even if the car in a proper slot is NOT full?

Are the charging stations on Charleston beside Ricks Ice Cream ready for use yet or not? I haven't seen much activity there.

@Bystander don't know if they are functioning but until Thursday there are threats of power outages due to high winds. It's not even summer yet.
