Mountain View and Saint Francis High Schools are less than two miles from each other, an easy five-minute drive on city streets.
On Friday, the schools’ girls soccer teams will meet 11 miles away, at Del Mar High in San Jose, to decide the Central Coast Section Open Division championship. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
St. Francis got there by beating reigning Open champion Mitty, 2-1, at home Tuesday night in the semifinal round.
Mountain View advanced with a 2-0 victory over Leigh.
Since the Spartans (20-0-1) and the Lancers (13-0-5) tied on Dec. 7 during the Firebird Classic, their journeys have each led to this showdown: The West Catholic Athletic League champion versus the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League champion.
Sophomore Charlotte Kohler scored both goals for St. Francis, the result of a team working together.
Senior Allie Montoya and sophomore Karena Shah each scored for Mountain View, with senior Isabella Walker recording both assists, also the result of a team working together.
Senior Sophia Sasaki recorded four saves to lead a strong effort from the Mountain View defense.
Sasaki, Montoya and Webster are part of a senior class that has been leading the way all season. Abby Westcott, Charis Toney, Elechi Iroaga, Julia Webster, Rebecca Lopez and Hope Stafford are also part of the senior class.
St. Francis seniors Grace Paulson, Riley Simonsen, Kirsten DeHoff, Caroline Kane, Layne Kohler, Casey Fisher and Sara Waddell form the foundation of the Lancers’ success.
