Buzzer beaters lift M-A boys and Los Altos girls in basketball playoffs

Doug Adams hit a basket at the buzzer in helping Menlo-Atherton defeat Los Altos 57-55 in a Central Coast Section Division I boys basketball quarterfinal contest Wednesday.

Jalen Williams scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half for the Bears (18-6), who advance to Thursday’s semifinal round at Mountain View.

Mountain View advanced with a 54-30 victory over Silver Creek.

Menlo-Atherton held a 50-40 advantage midway through the final period. Los Altos, led by Jake Skaggs with 24 points and Andrew Reilly with 23, rallied to tie the game at 51-all.

Alonso Gomez grabbed a defensive rebound and got the ball to Skaggs, who drove for the game-tying basket.

The game was tied at 55-55 when M-A inbounded the ball with 2.8 seconds remaining to play.

Williams got the ball to Adams along the baseline. Adams took one dribble and then went up for a short jumper that went through the net.

Ryan Anderson added 13 points for M-A.

In another Division I contest; Palo Alto had the game-tying basket waved off as too late and the Vikings fell to Alvarez 63-61.

Lucas Black scored 20 points to lead Paly. Sebastian Chancellor added 145 points and Matt Corrigan had 11.

In Division IV, Menlo raced to a 65-49 victory over Harker.

No. 3 Menlo plays at No. 2 The King's Academy in the semifinals at 7 pm Thursday. The two teams split the season series, each game decided by three points or less.

Junior Lucas Vogel netted 18 points and senior Daniel Solomon had 17 points and four steals for the Knights.

Menlo sophomore Sam Reznik grabbed seven rebounds and junior Brooks Mead added five.

Menlo led 33-16 at halftime and then went on a 20-9 third quarter run that put the game on ice.

In Division V, Andrew McDowell and Aidan Mahon hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter, giving Pinewood a 23-point lead into the fourth quarter en route to a 78-43 win over Shasta Summit.

Pinewood advances to play at No. 1 Priory, which beat Crystal Springs Uplands 65-38 behind Steve Emeneke’s double-double. Emeneke scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Tayo Sobomehin added 16 points and Oliver Conn had 13 for Priory.

Macy Watson hit a basket in the final 10 seconds to lift Los Altos past Santa Teresa 42-41 in a Division I game.

Santa Teresa took a 41-40 lead in the final minute before Watson, who finished with 12 points, nailed the game-winner.

Tara Davari led the Eagles with 16 points.

In Division IV, Menlo beat neighboring rival Sacred Heart Prep 59-17 at home Tuesday.

The top seeded Knights (10-8) opened an 18-2 first-quarter lead, thanks in large part to senior Shannon Li, who drained four three-pointers in the first 3:28. She finished with 25 points and five rebounds.

Freshman Angelica Chou added 11 points and senior Jazlin Chan had 10 for the Knights.

In Thursday's semifinals, Menlo hosts No. 4 Scotts Valley (15-8), a 51-33 winner over Carmel.

In Division V, Top-seeded Priory beat Cristo Rey of San Jose 87-13.
