Castilleja's Paisley de Blank thought she was going to play No. 1 doubles with Donya Gharachorloo in Monday's nonleague girls tennis match at Woodside.
First-year varsity coach Kirsten Gray had to make a pre-match switch, though, to protect her top singles player Lucy Slinger, who experienced some soreness.
de Blank, who played No. 3 singles, won a key match and helped Castilleja edge the Wildcats 4-3 on Monday.
Slinger took over at No. 1 doubles, Allison Row slipped into the top spot and was leading her match when Woodside's Daisy Koch fell ill in the second set.
The No. 3 doubles team of Leigh Hausman and Laura Schusser were also victorious for the Gators, who won their third straight after dropping the season-opener to Carlmont. Castilleja (3-1) travels to Robert Louis Stevenson in Pebble Beach for a nonleague match Friday.
Woodside's Camilla Jerng won her singles match while the team of Carmen Betchel and Annabelle Bechtel won their doubles match in a third set tiebreaker.
Kaitlyn Holty and Madelyn Lee won at No. 2 doubles for Woodside, which plays at Hillsdale on Tuesday afternoon.
In a nonleague match at Gunn, the Titans edged Sacred Heart Prep 4-3 with Aoi Junimoto, Kailana Matsuoka and Sarah Jung winning their singles matches. Elise Naddell and Nimisha Sivaraman held on to win their doubles match, 5-7, 7-6, 10-3, to clinch the win.
Alyssa Turenne gave SHP a point in singles while the teams of Clementine Devaux and Audrey Hampton and Maggie Kloninger and Katherine Showalter both won their doubles matches in a third set tiebreaker.
Gunn (1-2) opens SCVAL play Tuesday with a home match against Milpitas. Sacred Heart Prep (1-3) opens WBAL play at Menlo on Wednesday.
Girls golf
Castilleja freshman Norah Yang earned medalist honors with a round of 2-over-37 and the Gators beat Sacred Heart Prep 240-258 in a West Bay Athletic League golf match Monday at Menlo Country Club.
Joanne Zhou followed with a 39 for Castilleja, which improved to 4-0 in league competition. Neha Lalia led SHP (2-3, 2-2) with a 48.
Yang is currently tied for the WBAL scoring lead.
Sacred Heart Prep meets Notre Dame Belmont at the golf course at Moffett Field on Thursday. Castilleja's next scheduled match is Sept. 22 against Mercy Burlingame at Green Hills CC.
Boys water polo
Priory's Rahaan Umbarler scored four goals in an 18-4 PAL Ocean Division loss at Hillsdale on Monday. The Panthers fall to 0-2 in league play.
Sequoia evened its league record at 1-1, beating Capuchino 5-2 in San Bruno.
