Mayfield 16B girls water polo team earn a victory at Junior Olympics

Stanford 12s secure a top six finish

Samantha Lee scored four goals to lead the Mayfield 650 16B girls water polo club team to a 9-7 victory over Exeter on Saturday at the William Woolett Aquatic Center in Irvine in the Classic Division of the USAWP National Junior Olympics.

Exeter took a 4-3 lead midway through the second period. Mayfield responded with five consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Lee scored the game-tying goal late in the second period.

Grace Gormley converted a penalty shot to put Mayfield ahead to stay. Allison Gold gave 650 the early lead.

Mayfield (3-3) plays for ninth place Sunday against Southern at 10 a.m. at Villa Park High.

The Stanford 12 team guaranteed itself a top six finish, winning two of three matches played Saturday.

The 12s opened the day with a 12-7 victory over Santa Clara SC and then netted a 13-11 win over Newport Beach B before losing to Lamorinda B 18-9.

Stanford meets the SC Tritons for fifth place on Sunday.

The Mayfield 650 14 team lost twice Saturday and plays Alameda for 19th place on Sunday.

Stanford 14s won its first two games of a round robin Saturday and will take on the San Jose Express for 21st place.

Stanford 18 lost twice Saturday and will compete for 11th place on Sunday against Lamorinda.

Stanford 16 split two games Saturday and meets SoCal Gold B for 15th place. Mayfield 650 A plays the final game of its round robin against Riverside A.

Stanford 10 beat Davis 12-10 and then lost to Back Bay. The team has a match against Lamorinda B on Sunday.
