Menlo-Atherton freshman Kiely Tabaldo placed fifth in the 101 division of the CIF state girls wrestling championships in Bakersfield on Saturday.
M-A senior Anna Smith placed sixth at 131 and Gunn junior Mikayla Silverman was sixth at 150.
On the boys side, Palo Alto junior Adar Schwarzbach lost in the blood round, one match away from earning a spot in the podium.
Tabaldo opened the day losing to the No. 2 seed and then dropping a match to the No.1 seed. She came back to win her fifth-place match with a major decision, 8-0. Tabaldo won four of her six matches at the meet.
Smith fell to the top seed in the semifinal, 2-0, and then lost another decision to fall into the fifth-place match, where she lost. Smith finished 3-3.
The unseeded Silverman may have been the biggest surprise. She needed to beat a pair of top seven seeded wrestlers just for the chance to medal. Silverman accomplished that, downing the No. 6 seed 4-3 and pinning the seventh seed in 1:59. She then lost twice, including to the No. 2 seed in the fifth-place match. Silverman was 5-3 at the meet.
Schwarzbach lost his final match to the No. 3 seed at 145 and was 3-2 over the weekend.
