It was a grind and Pinewood managed to rev its motor just a bit smoother to pull away from host Sacred Heart Prep, 57-41, in a West Bay Athletic League girls basketball contest Tuesday night.

Courtni Thompson scored 16 points, had seven rebounds and four assists as the Panthers (14-1, 3-1) pulled into a first-place tie with the Gators (11-4, 3-1).

Una Jovanovic added 12 points for Pinewood, which hosts Eastside Prep at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Maia Garcia recorded a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Megan Norris scored 17 points to lead Sacred Heart Prep, which travels to play Priory at 5 p.m. Friday. Denise Stine added 10 points.

Aniyah Augmon scored 14 points and had seven rebounds as Priory (10-6, 2-2) beat host Notre Dame Belmont 55-24 in another WBAL contest. Dominique Robson and Sydney Donovan each hit three 3-pointers for Priory

Menlo (14-2, 2-1) travels to play Eastside Prep (7-10, 0-3) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Pinewood opened leads of 12-2 and 18-8 in the first quarter but SHP rallied to close within 30-27 by halftime.

Stine, opportunistic on defense, used her quickness to steal several passes, including what appeared to be a handoff. That helped stymie Pinewood’s offensive momentum.

Pinewood more than held its own defensively, slowing SHP’s transition game and forcing the Gators out of rhythm. The Panthers outscored SHP 27-14 in the second half.

Annika Decker scored seven points, had seven rebounds and distributed five assists for Pinewood.
