Stanford freshman Brandon Briones earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week after leading the Cardinal to a victory over California at the Cal Benefit Cup on Saturday.

Briones, in his collegiate debut, won the all-around title with a score of 82.400, the second-best mark in the nation and first among freshmen. He won event titles on floor (13.750), rings (13.850) and vault (14.750). He added third-place results on pommel horse and parallel bars.

Briones finished the week with the best vault score in the nation, fifth-best mark on rings, and sixth-best on parallel bars (13.800).

The two-time junior Olympic National Champion and US National Champion has also competed for Team USA as a member of the Junior Pan American Championship team and Youth Olympics Games team in Buenos Aires.

The defending NCAA champion Cardinal returns to action on Saturday at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago. Stanford will compete against Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State.

The Cardinal hosts the Stanford Open on Saturday, January 25 at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion and Ford Center.
