Locals reach NCAA national quarterfinals in men's water polo

There will be plenty of local interest when the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship continues Thursday at the University of Pacific in Stockton.

Palo Alto grad Jared Stanley and his Bucknell teammates take on USC at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinal round while Sacred Heart Prep alums John Claude Marco and Xavier Marco join their Pepperdine teammates in a match against UC Davis at 2:45 p.m. St. Francis alum and former Stanford Water Polo Club player Sean Ferrari also plays for the Waves.

Bucknell (23-8) advanced into the quarterfinals with a 13-12 victory over previously undefeated Harvard (29-1) on Saturday. The Bison won their first NCAA game in 24 years.

Stanley scored at the end of the third quarter, giving Bucknell a 12-10 edge into the final period. Bucknell lost at Harvard by a goal on October.

SHP alum Michael Sonsini recorded three assists for the Crimson and finished with 66 assists, third all-time on the single-season list.

Top-ranked Stanford (19-2) meets the Bucknell-USC winner in Saturday’s semifinal. Pacific hosts UC Davis or Pepperdine. The championship match is slated for Sunday at 3 p.m.
