Catarina Macario collected a pair of goals and second-ranked Stanford remained atop the Pac-12 Conference with a 5-0 women’s soccer win over Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Pape Field.

Catarina Macario’s led the way with two goals and one assist and Madison Haley registered one goal and one assist while Katie Meyer made one save to earn the shutout. Sophia Smith and Carly Malatskey also scored, and Sam Tran and Abby Greubel finished with one assist apiece.

Stanford’s unbeaten streak in Pac-12 play stretches to 34 games while Macario’s goal total hits 18, a career high.

Macario needed just 13 games in 2019 to reach 18 goals, one more than her 17-goal total as a freshman in 25 games. Stanford dominated possession and finished with a 28-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Cardinal (12-1, 5-0) was rebuffed by the Ducks (4-4-5, 0-3-2) for most of the first half but sprung to life with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the period.

In the 41st minute, Smith and Haley orchestrated a Cardinal counter attack which resulted in Smith forcing a diving save. Greubel was quickest to the rebound, getting her boot on the ball and drawing an Oregon hand ball in the box. Macario stepped up to the penalty spot and smashed her 17th goal of the season into the net to make it 1-0.

Moments later, Smith doubled the lead with a dazzling solo effort. Smith collected a loose ball inside the Ducks’ half and sped past multiple Oregon defenders before unleashing a perfectly placed, left-footed shot into the top corner. It was Smith’s seventh of the season in just nine appearances. She needed 13 games to score seven in 2018.

In the 53rd minute, Macario secured her seventh multi-goal performance of the season to make it 3-0. Macario played a tidy one-two with Haley before placing her shot inside the far post from the 18-yard line.

Macario and Haley produced another goal in the 65th minute with Haley doing the honors this time. Macario curled a low cross from the right wing into the path of Haley, who beat her defender to the ball and redirected her sixth goal of the season into the net.

Macario’s 132 career points rank sixth in program history, behind only Christen Press (183), Sarah Rafanelli (152), Kelley O’Hara (146), Julie Foudy (137) and Castilleja alum Lindsay Taylor (133).

Malatskey got on the scoresheet in the 75th minute to put a bow on the performance. Greubel picked out Tran on the right flank and Tran’s cross met Malatskey at the six-yard line with the senior burying her eighth of the season.

No. 2 Stanford returns to the pitch on Saturday when it plays host to No. 22 UCLA at 7 p.m.
