Former Stanford volleyball star Karissa Cook went to Hawaii to get her first taste of beach volleyball at a high level. She became an All-American and turned that into a professional career on the AVP Tour and FIVB World Tour.
Competing with Florida State grad Jace Pardon, the American duo plays for a gold medal in beach volleyball at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Tuesday against Argentina’s Ana Gallay and Fernanda Pereyra at 11:30 a.m.
Cook and Pardon reached the finals by defeating Brazil’s Angela and Carolina 24-22, 21-16. The Americans beat a team from Paraguay 21-8, 21-10 in Sunday’s quarterfinal.
Against Brazil, the U.S. took a quick 3-0 lead in the second set but then saw its opponents rally to take a lead. Cook and Pardon were able to regain the advantage.
After Brazil tied it at 11-11, the Americans carved a 19-12 advantage and finished off the match.
Cook and Pardon rallied from behind to win the first set. The Brazilians were ahead 17-10 when the U.S. made its move. An opponent error tied the match at 20-20 and Pardon served an ace for a 21-20 edge.
At 22-all, Pardon recorded a kill and following a lengthy rally, Cook recorded a kill to end it.
