Matteo Romeo collected three hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs as the Palo Alto 15U all-star baseball team rebounded from an opening day loss to beat South Lake Tahoe 19-7 in an elimination game Wednesday of the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional at Taft High.
De’aveon Roberts and Ben Gladstone each drove in a pair of runs for Palo Alto, which advances to play another elimination game at 4 p.m. Thursday against a team to be determined.
Palo Alto was in a similar situation at the NorCal State Tournament before winning five straight games to advance to the regional. South Tahoe, the Nevada state champion, eliminated Bel-Mateo on Tuesday night.
Romeo, who was not on the 15-year-old all-star roster for the district tournament, tripled home a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as part of a six-run rally. Brody Simison, up from the 14-year-old all-stars, and Roberts also drove in runs in the first.
South Lake Tahoe scored four times in the second but Palo Alto began pulling away with a three-run third as Jake Foster and Warren Cook, another not on the district roster, each drove in runs.
Cook also threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, with four strikeouts, allowing Palo Alto to add to its lead. Simison threw the final two innings.
Colin Thibault and Gladstone each added two hits and Dante Black and JP Aguilar also drove in runs.
Aaron Roberts and Max Moreno combined to throw a one-hitter and the Pacific Union Capitalists bear the visiting Atwater Aviators 8-0 on Wednesday.
Roberts struck out 10, including the final six hitters he faced, in five scoreless innings and Moreno added five in four innings. Neither pitcher walked a batter as they combined to pitch to one batter over the minimum.
Palo Alto grad Josh Kasevich added three hits for the Caps (23-7), who open a three-game road trip with the Redding Colt 45’s at 7:15 p.m. Friday. Caiden Connor added three hits and Coleman Brigman drove in a pair of runs.
