Ninth-inning heroics give PUF Caps a season-opening victory

Nathan Martorella singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Palo Alto-based Pacific Union Financial Capitalists opened its collegiate summer baseball season with a 5-4 victory over the West Coast Kings on Friday at West Valley College.

Steven Zobac, who scored the winning run, and incoming Stanford freshman Adam Crampton each added two hits for the Caps, who travel to take on the Atwater Aviators on Sunday.

Palo Alto grad Josh Kasevich started and went four innings for PUF, allowing three runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out five and retired the final 10 batters he faced.

Jake Harrell followed with three scoreless innings and was in line for the victory after the Caps scored twice in the sixth to pull ahead, 4-3.

Woodside grad Joseph King, heading to Washington State, and Caiden Matheny opened the inning with singles. King scored on an outfield error and Matheny advanced to third on the play. Will Worthington followed with a sacrifice fly.

Octavo Corona gave up an unearned run in the top of the ninth, tying the game and setting up Martorella's big hit.

Brock Jones, who was 1 for 4 and scored twice, will also be a freshman at Stanford in the fall.
