Kyle Stowers, the first Stanford player taken in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning but the fourth-ranked Cardinal baseball team could not build on it, dropping an 8-1 decision to Mississippi State in the NCAA Starkville Regional final Sunday and ending its season.

Stanford (45-14) did not get another hit until two were out in the bottom of the seventh, when Tim Tawa and pinch hitter Christian Molfetta each singled.

The Cardinal reached its first Super Regional in five years but could not advance to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time since 2008.

Brandon Wulff added a double for the Cardinal, which had to win three consecutive elimination games to win the Stanford Regional last weekend.

Closer Jack Little came in the fifth and threw four scoreless innings to keep Stanford within striking range. He faltered in the ninth and gave way to Will Matthiessen, a finalist for the John Olerud Award, who gave up a three-run home run before ending the inning.
