Incoming Stanford freshman Floranne Carroll has been named to Canada’s women’s water polo roster for the FISU Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy.

The World University Games, or Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Held every two years in cities around the globe, the Universiade incorporates both educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions and features over 9,300 athletes from 128 countries. This year’s games will run from July 3-14, with some competitions beginning on July 2.

Four years ago, Stanford represented the United States at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, securing fifth place. Two years ago Madison Berggren, Aria Fischer, Dani Jackovich, Kat Klass, Jamie Neushul, Kiley Neushul, Jordan Raney and Gabby Stone were on a USA team sourced from the top incoming, current and recent college talent in the U.S. That squad rolled to eight wins, outscored its opponents 127-38 and claimed gold.

Women’s water polo has been contested at the World University Games five previous times after being introduced in Belgrade in 2009. In 2011, a USA select team which included Cardinal alumnae Amber Oland, Pallavi Menon and Alyssa Lo along with Stanford associate head coach Susan Ortwein on staff claimed silver.

Canada begins the World University Games against Japan on Tuesday, July 2 and will also meet France, Czechia and Hungary in group play.

From Montreal, Carroll attends College Marianopolis and competes for CAMO club program. She claimed three national titles, twice at the 19-and-under level and once as a senior, in three years with her club team. Carroll was a member of Team Canada’s 2018 Junior Pan American Championship team in Florida and joined the Canadian Senior National Team in New Zealand for the 2018 FINA Intercontinental Cup. In January, she won gold at the 2019 UANA Cup in Sao Paulo, Brazil and scored in the final against Cuba.

Carroll will be with Stanford during its first week as guests of the Chinese National Team in Chengdu before flying directly to Naples from China for the start of the World University Games.
