Palo Alto received the No. 8 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division baseball playoffs that open Wednesday at various locations. The Vikings (20-9) open Saturday against top-seeded Valley Christian (26-4) at a site and time to be determined.

Gunn (15-12) was seeded 13th in Division I and will travel to play Leland (17-7) at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Menlo-Atherton (13-14) was seeded 15th and travels to play Los Altos (21-5), also at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Menlo School (16-9) was awarded the second seed in Division III and will meet Thomas More (18-6) Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Palo Alto finished third in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division and then came back to win the league tournament.

The Vikings are 13-9 against teams who are entered in the CCS tournament, including a 3-3 mark against the Open Division. Paly beat No. 3 seed Los Gatos two of three and topped No. 7 seed St. Francis. The Vikings lost to No. 5 Serra and No. 6 San Benito.

Paly is 8-5 against Division I teams and has played the top five seeds (4-4). The Vikings are 2-1 against Divisions II and III.

Paly pitchers own an ERA of 1.63 and have produced six shutouts, including a pair of no-hitters. They have held opponents to three runs or less on 21 occasions.

The Titans lost two straight to close the regular season but have won five of seven overall. They finished in a tie for first, with Santa Clara, in the SCVAL El Camino Division. Gunn is 1-9 against teams playing in the CCS tournament.

The Bears finished in a third-place tie with Woodside in the PAL Ocean Division. They owned the tiebreaker due to splitting with first-place Aragon while Woodside went 0-2 with the Dons. So M-A received the chance to play Lake Division champion Jefferson for the PAL’s eighth CCS playoff berth, winning 5-0.

Menlo finished in a second-place tie with Burlingame, a game behind Carlmont. The Knights swept Carlmont during the regular season and are 8-5 against the CCS field.

Softball

Gunn (16-3) was seeded eighth in the 16-team CCS Division I tournament and will play at home against Piedmont Hills (13-7) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Titans won 10 of their final 11 games to finish second behind Fremont in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division.

Gunn has a 10-1 record at home, with the loss occurring in the regular-season finale against the Firebirds (16-8), who are seeded 10th and travel to Branham (12-8) Wednesday.

The Titans are 2-2 against teams that made the CCS tournament, losing to Fremont twice and beating Lincoln and Mercy-Burlingame.

Sophomore Emma Sloan leads the team with a .529 batting average and has driven in 41 runs, more than double Ashley Ng’s 19 RBIs, which is second. Maddie Ta is third with 18.

Sloan and Madison Wiseman share pitching duties. Wiseman (10-3, 2.96) has appeared in 18 games and has 48 strikeouts in 71 innings. Sloan (6-0, 1.39) has made 12 appearances and has 32 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings.
