Gunn’s Jared Freeman posted the top qualifying marks in both the shot put and discus Saturday at the Central Coast Section track and field trials at Gilroy High.

And his mark of 56-7 in the shot put was a personal-best and CCS season-best by a foot and a half. Freeman’s previous best was 55-1. He established a new personal-best on his second throw, which was marked at 55-8. Then on his final throw he went 56-7.

Freeman also threw 160-6, on his last attempt, to lead all discus qualifiers.

“Jared’s peaking at the right time or at least being clutch at the right time,’’ Gunn coach Michael Granville said.

The Menlo-Atherton duo of Noa Ngalu (10th, 141-4) and Songi Eke (12th, 136-5) also advanced in the discus to the CCS finals next Friday at Gilroy.

Menlo School’s Charlotte Tomkinson qualified with the second-fastest times in both the 400 (57.18) and the 800 (2:16.10), heading a series of strong performances by members of the Menlo girls team.

In addition to Tomkinson, Kyra Pretre, Michelle Louie and Alexandra Chan also qualified for the finals in two events apiece.

The Menlo 4×400 relay team qualified second behind San Lorenzo Valley in 4:01.28.

Like Freeman in the boys shot put, Castilleja’s Moorea Mitchell had a big breakthrough in the girls shot put, eclipsing the 40-foot barrier for the first time with a throw of 40-3, third-best among qualifiers. Mitchell also advanced in the discus, 11th at 109-11.

Gunn’s Justin Chiao had the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the boys 800 at 1:56.29. Castilleja’s Tevah Gevelber ran a time of 11:17.77 in the girls 3,200, fourth among qualifiers. Woodside’s Sarah Perry was 11th (11:24.53).

M-A’s Francisco Sanchez ran 11.04 in the boys 100, fifth in a competitive tight pack.

Paly’s Henry Saul, who has a best of 9:10, ran 9:35 to qualify seventh in the boys 3,200.
