Prep baseball: Bears shut down Half Moon Bay in PAL opener

Pete Discher and Elliot Zeien combined on a four-hitter and Menlo-Atherton beat host Half Moon Bay 6-0 in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division opener on Tuesday.

Jake Wang tripled, singled, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Bears (3-2, 1-0), who host the previously undefeated Cougars in a PAL contest Thursday at 4 p.m.

Jake Albro also drove in a run for M-A, which won its third straight. Anthony Waller added two hits.

The Bears are looking to take another step forward under David Klein this season, who took over in 2017, a year after M-A finished 5-22, 2-12.

The Bears were 12-15, 6-6 in Klein's first year and finished 14-12, 8-6 last year, which included a 10-1 mark at home.

Half Moon Bay and M-A split their season series last year, each winning at home.

M-A threw its first shutout since Tommy Eisenstat and Waller combined on a 1-hitter in a 1-0 win over Terra Nova last April 11. Albro scored the only run of the game.

Discher allowed all four hits during his five-inning stint. He struck out six and walked one. Zeien threw two hitless innings to finish the game.

SCVAL El Camino Division

Nathan Nakamitsu collected three hits for the Gunn baseball team, which dropped an 8-1 home decision to Milpitas in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division contest Tuesday.

Josh Pennington added two hits for the Titans (1-4, 0-1), who travel to play Milpitas at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Gunn scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Nakamitsu singled with two outs and Ryan So followed with a double.

Titan pitchers managed to combine for 10 strikeouts and three walks. Winning pitcher Max Gonzalez struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. He also hit a home run.
