Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s getting to that time of the season where league races are beginning to take shape and games mean a little more. Soccer results become all the more interesting as ties influence placement. And so it is for both the Sacred Heart Prep boys and girls teams.

Liam Johnson converted a penalty kick and assisted on another goal to help the SHP boys team knock off The King’s Academy, 3-0, in Sunnyvale on Friday.

The win puts the Gators (10-0-1, 3-0) atop the West Bay Athletic League standings; right there with defending WBAL champion Harker (9-1, 4-0), which beat Eastside Prep, 3-0. Priory (4-4, 2-2) downed Crystal Springs Uplands, 4-2, in another match.

Sacred Heart Prep, which also got goals from Brian Tinsley and Ethan Veghte, with an assist from Alexi Stavropoulos, just so happens to be playing Harker on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on its home turf.

The winner gets to call itself the front runner while the loser will have to deal with Menlo School (8-2-1, 2-1), which was idle Friday and meets Eastside (2-6-1, 1-3) at home Wednesday, also at 3:30 p.m., for the role of top contender.

The Knights are very much alive in the race to the top. They still have a match remaining with Sacred Heart Prep and two with the Eagles.

Priory (4-4, 2-2) also has a stake in the race. The Panthers first match with Menlo, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed to Monday, Feb. 4 at Priory.

The coaches and players may not be peaking but the final two weeks of the regular season could be very interesting. Between Jan. 31 and the end of the WBAL schedule on Feb. 14, Harker, Menlo, SHP and Priory all play each other.

In the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division, Gunn beat visiting Lynbrook, 1-0. The Titans (7-4-2, 2-2-2) go to Monta Vista for a 3:30 p.m. game Wednesday.

In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Palo Alto (6-2-6, 1-1-4) hosts Homestead at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gunn edged host Lynbrook, 1-0, to remain undefeated in SCVAL El Camino Division play. The Titans (7-5-2, 6-0) host Monta Vista at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Emersen Sweeney scored and Ana Schremp assisted for Gunn.

In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Palo Alto and visiting Santa Clara played to a 0-0 tie. The Vikings (2-6-4, 1-2-2) travel to Homestead for a 3:30 p.m. game Wednesday.

In the WBAL Foothill Division, Sacred Heart Prep made itself known with a 1-1 tie in a match with Mercy Burlingame and denying the Crusaders (6-2-3, 2-0-1) a chance to keep pace with league-leading Menlo (11-1, 3-0), which plays a nonleague match at Monterey on Saturday morning.

Kristine Fischer-Colbrie scored the Gators goal, giving Sacred Heart Prep (5-3-4, 0-2-1) a boost as it prepares to defend home turf against the Knights on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

The Gators have seven matches to improve their current fifth-place standing and Tuesday’s match looms large.

In other matches Tuesday, Mercy Burlingame hosts defending league champion Notre Dame Belmont and Priory welcomes The King’s Academy to Portola Valley, both at 3:30 p.m.

In the Skyline Division, Castilleja took care of host Notre Dame San Jose 3-1 Friday, setting up an early confrontation with Crystal Springs Uplands at 3:30 p.m. Monday on the pitch at El Camino Park in Palo Alto.

Amanda Khu had two goals and an assist. Georgia Nieh had a goal and two assists.

Castilleja and the Gryphons are currently tied for the Skyline lead, each with a 4-0 record (5-3 overall). Harker is third at 3-1-1 (5-4-3).
