Local soccer team advances to AYSO Section 2 tournament

The Menlo Park U12 Red Bull boys soccer team advanced to this weekend's AYSO Section 2 tournament in Foster City by winning the Area tournament over the weekend in Menlo Park.

Red Bull took an 8-0 league record, outscoring opponents 35-4, into the postseason and just kept winning, beating the Mountain View Strikers, 4-0, the Silicon Valley Sapphire Dragons, 5-0, and the Los Altos Raptors, 2-0, during pool play.

In the semifinal match, Red Bull topped the Los Altos Neon Nitros, 6-1, and then beat the Mountain View Green Mountain Boys, 5-1, in the championship.

Of Red Bull's 13 players, 10 scored at least one goal during the season and the team registered eight shutouts. They take a 13-0 mark into the section tournament, which features teams from California and Nevada.

"The team exhibited strong ball control, consistently controlling the midfield and owning the majority of possession," reported coach Carl Hesse. "A strong work ethic enabled the defense to consistently be in proper position to defend attacks. By season's end the team was skilled and spreading the field, creating space and switching the point of attack from one side to the other and playing great defense all around."

The Menlo Park Jailbirds also competed in the tournament, finishing third.
