Prep report: M-A silences the Scots in PAL volleyball

 

The Menlo-Atherton girls volleyball team beat host Carlmont, 26-28, 25-19, 25-17, 25-17, in Peninsula Athletic League match on Tuesday.

M-A held the early lead in the first set but Carlmont pulled ahead and won, 28-26, after four match points.

The second set was another see-saw match with both teams exchanging the lead before M-A pulled ahead to take the set 25-19. From there on, M-A seemed to have the momentum on their side and won the third and fourth sets 25-17, 25-17.

The Bears were led by sophomore outside Emma Spindt with 15 kills, followed by senior right side Alicia Letvin and junior outside Natalie Grover, both with 11 kills.

Junior middle Marit Hoyem finished with seven kills and five blocks. Letvin and senior middle Sawyer Jones also contributed a pair of blocks a piece.

Junior setter Mariah Grover propelled the offense with 48 assists. On defense, senior libero Erica Fischer had 22 digs and Spindt finished with 15.

M-A (4-1, 2-0) hosts undefeated Hillsdale at 6:15 pm on Thursday.

Elsewhere in the PAL Bay Division, host Woodside dropped the first set but then rallied to take the next three for a 15-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Burlingame on Tuesday.

Wildcats' junior Eleana Campbell recorded 19 kills, 15 digs, four service aces and hit .400 on the night for Woodside (7-4, 1-1), which hosts San Mateo at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Sarah Strus added nine kills and four aces while Katia Kishinsky and Molly Buddie combined for 40 assists and 17 digs.

In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Amelia Gibbs recorded 14 kills on a .667 hitting percentage to help visiting Palo Alto best Monta Vista, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20, on Tuesday.

Sophia Krugler had 10 digs and nine kills for the Vikings (5-2, 2-0), who host Mountain View at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Rebekah Limb added eight kills and three aces while Kylie Mies tallied 25 assists and eight digs.

Sarah Ranzetta recorded 12 kills and Castilleja downed visiting The King's Academy, 25-11, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18, in a West Bay Athletic League Skyline Division match on Tuesday.

Hadley Nunn added 10 digs and five kills for the Gators (3-0, 2-0), who host Crystal Springs Upland at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rebecca Mak had 25 assists and eight aces while Jordan Amos-Grosser contributed seven and four aces.

Girls golf

Menlo School rolled to a 215-333 West Bay Athletic League win against The King's Academy on Tuesday at Baylands Golf Course.

The Knights (2-0, 2-0) played well on a windy day on the par-37 course in Palo Alto. Junior Gianna Inguagiato recorded medalist honors for a second straight meet with an even-par round.

She drove the green of the par-4 hole 7 and finished the ninth hole with a birdie by hitting the par-5 green in two swings. Junior Vikki Xu carded a 2-over par 39, playing a strong, strategic round.

Freshman Taylor Baik shot a 42 with many shots close to the pin, and some good up and downs and finished with a birdie. Junior Sulwen Ma finished with a 44 highlighted with an eagle on the par-5 No.3.

Sophomore Sara Fujimori shot a 53 and junior Samantha Stevens earned a 71 with an approach shot to 15 feet on the final hole.

Mercy of Burlingame won its third consecutive match, beating Notre Dame of Belmont, 255-303, at Shoreline GC on Tuesday.

The Crusaders (3-2) were led by Brooke Barron with a round of 39 and Maya Zeidan with a 46. Notre Dame Belmont's low scores were Avani Tumulori (47) and Felicia Wei (52).
