Five Stanford swimmers, two coaches make USA Swimming team


Five members of Stanford's men's swimming and diving team, as well as coaches Ted Knapp and Jeff Kostoff, were named to Team USA for the 2018-19 season USA Swimming announced Thursday.

No university had more 2019 NCAA-eligible student-athletes on the list than Stanford, with senior Abrahm DeVine, juniors Grant Shoults and True Sweetser and freshmen Jack LeVant and Daniel Roy making the team. Knapp and Kostoff were named Team USA coaches.

DeVine, the reigning Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year, made the team in the 200-meter individual medley (1:57.41) and 400-meter individual medley (4:13.77) with both times coming at the Phillips 66 National Championship in July.

Shoults, a six-time All-American and two-time Pac-12 500-yard freestyle champion, qualified for the team in the 400-meter freestyle. Shoults (3:46.90) finished runner-up at Phillips 66 Nationals to make the national team.

Sweetser, the 2017 1,500-meter national champion, made the team in the 800-meter freestyle and 1,500 freestyle. Both of Sweetser's qualifying times also came at Phillips 66 Nationals.

LeVant (1:46.39), an incoming freshman from Southlake, Texas, set a world junior record in the 200-meter freestyle preliminaries at Phillips 66 Nationals, eventually placing fifth in the A-final with 1:46.46. LeVant was named Junior Swimmer of the Meet by SwimSwam with Stanford also earning a Team of the Meet honorable mention.

Roy (2:09.76), an incoming freshman from Spokane, Washington, finished sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke at Phillips 66 Nationals to make the team. Roy went on to win four medals, including two gold in the 400-meter mixed medley relay and 200 breast, at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Fiji.
