Cardinal varsity 8 boat defends WIRA championship

Stanford's top-ranked varsity eight boat repeated as Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Champions Sunday, winning the Varsity 8+ Grand Final to highlight a weekend of racing at Lake Natoma in Gold River.

The Cardinal crew registered a time of 6:40.296 on the Lake Natoma course, defeating San Diego State by over five seconds (6:45.496). Loyola Marymount finished third in the Open Final, clocking a time of 6:48.675.

Stanford also competed against Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Seattle and Santa Clara in the race.

Stanford defended its Grand Final title on Sunday, after winning last year's competition over both San Diego State and Loyola Marymount, with all three boats finishing in the same order as last year's race.

Stanford's second varsity eight also captured a title this weekend, winning the Junior Varsity 8+ Grand Final by almost eight seconds.

The Cardinal raced to a 6:51.592, outpacing Sacramento State's time of 6:59.534. San Diego state placed third in the Grand Final with a time of 7:02.502.

The Cardinal's varsity and novice four boats were also in action throughout the weekend. The varsity four placed fourth in the Varsity 4+ Grand Final with a time of 8:01.135.

Stanford's novice four, which won its Saturday heat, placed third in the Novice 4+ Grand Final with a time of 7:54.506. Central Oklahoma took the race with a time of 7:36.758, while LMU finished second with a time of 7:39.089.

Stanford returns to the Bay Area next weekend, hosting Cal in dual action at Redwood Shores on Saturday,
