A man accused of mailing an explosive device to an East Palo Alto resident pleaded not guilty to charges in San Francisco federal court on Feb. 28.

Ross Gordon Laverty, 56, of Oakland, is charged with one count of mailing an explosive device with intent to injure or kill.

Laverty allegedly mailed the parcel to the male victim, which was delivered to the man’s residence on Oct. 19, 2017, according to federal prosecutors. The man was suspicious of the parcel and didn’t open it, but when he placed it in his backyard, the package exploded, causing him non-life-threatening injuries.

Laverty was arrested in Oakland on Dec. 21.
