Stanford club into semifinals of U.S. Open of Water Polo


Katie Dudley added six more goals to her total on Saturday and the Cardinal club water polo team won a pair of matches at the U.S. Open of Water Polo at Berkeley's Spieker Aquatics Complex. Dudley has 15 goals in four games the past two days.

The Cardinal beat 680 WP 11-3 and then came back to top the Wolverines 9-5.

Stanford will meet the USA Junior Team, which features Sacred Heart Prep grad Maddy Johnston and Ryann Neushul, the younger sister of Stanford grads Kiley and Jamie Neushul, in Sunday's semifinal round at 8 a.m. The championship is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Shannon Cleary scored just over a minute into the Cardinal's win over 680 WP. That put Stanford ahead to stay, though it took over eight minutes for the Cardinal to score again.

Lauren Bywater and Mackenzie Wiley scored within a minute of each other in the second quarter to give the Cardinal a 3-0 advantage.

Cleary scored again late in the first half to help Stanford take a 6-1 edge into halftime.

Dudley added four goals, while Bywater and Cleary each had two. Cassidy Wiley and Kat Klass each had a pair of assists.

Goalie Julia Hermann recorded eight saves.

The Wolverines were within 3-2 with 5:27 left in the first half. Stanford responded with five consecutive goals and held Michigan scoreless for 16:58.

Cassidy Wiley, Bywater and Dudley each had two goals.

Stanford grad Dani Jackovich scored three goals and Cardinal grad Ashley Grossman added an assist and the New York Athletic Club A team walloped Davis, 13-4.

NYAC held off a late rally to beat the Bruin 7-5 later in the day to claim the Pool C title and a spot in Sunday's semifinal against. Grossman scored twice.

Neushul had four goals and four assists and Johnston added an assist in U.S. Junior's 21-3 win over the Spartans. Incoming Stanford freshman Sarah Klass added two goals and an assist.
