Menlo School’s No. 2 doubles team of David Quezada and Marco Volpi recovered from a first-set loss to win a hotly-contested tie-breaker over Tim Berthier and Jeffrey Jorgensen and help the Knights earn a 6-1 victory over visiting Menlo-Atherton on Monday in a quarterfinal match of the Central Coast Section boys’ tennis tournament.

Menlo (22-2) advances into the semifinal round at Bay Club Courtside at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and will face Bellarmine (20-4), which beat Saratoga 4-3 in another quarterfinal round.

Sid Chari at No. 1 singles and freshman Brandon Aprill at No, 2 singles led the top-seeded Knights. Clark Safran and Andrei Volgin both won 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. Bo Leschly and Mark Ball won at No. 1 doubles.

Zach Ostrow and Camillo Saueressig earned the Bears’ point at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Will Borie and Rohan Chandna.

Bellarmine and Menlo have played four common opponents, including M-A (18-5). The Bells beat the Bears by a 4-3 margin early in the season.

Menlo topped Davis 6-1 and Mitty 6-1 and lost to Clovis North 4-3. Bellarmine beat Davis and Clovis North 6-1 and topped Mitty 7-0.

Baseball

Woodside scored five runs in the first inning and then held on to beat El Camino 7-6 in a nonleague game Monday.

Alex Roque’s two-run single highlighted the big inning. Joseph King, Jeff Guertin and Evan Yedinak also drove in runs for the Wildcats.

Roque, King, Guertin, Yedinak and Tim Goode each had two hits for Woodside.

Badminton

Gunn High’s Ken Zhu and Joanne Chan earned the No. 1 overall seed in mixed doubles for the Central Coast Section championships, which begin Friday at Independence High at 3 p.m.

Palo Alto’s Michael Chau and Flavia Stiglich earned the No. 2 seed and, like Zhu and Chan, have a first-round bye. The mixed doubles, along with girls singles and boys singles, will be contested through the quarterfinals on Friday.

The boys doubles and girls doubles preliminary action begins Saturday at 10 a.m. The championship round gets underway at 1 p.m.

Gunn’s Jackie Lou will compete in girls singles, Palo Alto’s Raymon Chen is entered in boys singles and the Gunn duo of Adrian Lee and Rasmus Janmyr are seeded third in boys doubles.

Lee and Janmyr open against Lincoln’s Velle Ladores and Andrew Lee in the double-elimination format.
