East Palo Alto man receives three-year prison sentence for child porn

Deepak Kapoor Charan pleaded no contest to one felony count

A 25-year-old East Palo Alto man was sentenced on Friday to three years in state prison for a felony of using a minor for commercial sex acts, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

Police started the investigation into Deepak Kapoor Charan in August 2015 when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told them someone in East Palo Alto was distributing child porn and gave the user's IP address, prosecutors said.

The offenses date back to Dec. 30, 2014 until he was arrested on Feb. 24, 2016, when officers served a search warrant at Charan's home. Police took his cellphone and laptop, where they later discovered child porn and multiple online exchanges over KiK Messenger that showed he asked children for naked selfies, according to prosecutors. Further investigation indicated Charan traded child porn with other people.

On Nov. 21, the morning his trial was set to begin on six counts, Charan pleaded no contest to the felony charge in exchange for a maximum eight-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors sought a six-year prison sentence for Charan while defense attorneys requested for probation and time served in San Mateo County jail.
