The Palo Alto Transit Center bus depot will be temporarily closed beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Thursday, Jan. 26 due to a City of Palo Alto construction project, transit agency officials in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties said. Caltrain service will not be affected.

The city is replacing the sanitary sewer system. A manhole in the center of the driveway from Mitchell Lane leading into the transit center will be removed and the work requires closure of the bus depot, officials said.

To accommodate passengers, transportation agencies will offer temporary bus stops at the following locations:

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA):

To Caltrain:

VTA will place a temporary bus stop on El Camino Real in front of P.F. Chang’s near Stanford Shopping Center, at the Quarry Road intersection. The location is accessible by way of a paved path through El Camino Park. VTA passengers would then cross El Camino Real to get to the temporary bus stop.

Riders who are transferring from VTA buses to arrive at Caltrain will also be dropped off in front of P.F. Chang’s. To access Caltrain, they would cross El Camino Real, walk through El Camino Park to the transit center and travel as usual to the Caltrain platform, VTA officials said.

VTA personnel and security will be on site to assist passengers. The transit agency will provide signage and lighting to assist with directions to the temporary location.

Customers needing assistance can contact VTA Customer Service at 408-321-2300.

  1. @Julie:

The bus depot closure dates are listed in the article. A temporary VTA bus stop is to be located in front of P.F. Chang’s at Stanford Shopping Center. This is also mentioned in the article.

For further information on VTA bus 22, please contact VTA. Their phone number is listed in the article. You can also visit their website at http://www.vta.org.

There is a route notice for the 22 bus on the line’s web page:

    http://www.vta.org/routes/rt22

  2. Temporary lighting has been set up along the 200-foot path through El Camino Park.
That path is normally pitch dark dusk-to-dawn.

Looks like 24-hour security guard watch over the construction equipment.
I assume the regular overnighters will move up to the train station benches for the week.

The place can appear a bit sketchy at 3 a.m. (I sometimes use the Samtrans 397 to SFO for early departures, but would suggest Super Shuttle, $24 plus tip, vs $2.25 for the bus.) The 95 University Avenue address shows up often in the police blotter.
