Knights rally to 84-69 victory at Orange Holiday Classic

 

Joe Foley made three 3-pointers and finished with 29 points to lead the Menlo School boys' basketball team past Chino, 84-69, in the second round of the 52nd Orange Holiday Classic at Hope International in Fullerton on Tuesday.

Riley Woodson added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Thomas Brown contributed 15 points.

Foley added eight assists, five steals, and four rebounds while fellow junior JH Tevis pitched in with eight points and six rebounds.

Menlo (2-3) faces Beckman of Irvine (7-7) on Wednesday at 1:50 pm at Hope International in Fullerton.

The Knights trailed, 27-16, and then rode Foley's 14 points in the second quarter to eke out a 41-39 advantage at halftime.

A stingy defense limited Chino to 12 points in the quarter.

At the Surf and Slam Classic in San Diego, Sacred Heart Prep sustained a 63-53 setback to Camas (WA) on Tuesday. Eric DeBrine sank four 3-pointers and finished with 29 points for the Gators (1-5).

Sacred Heart Prep meets Eastlake (WA) on Wednesday.

Girls' basketball

Ila Lane scored 15 points and help Priory build an early 10-point lead over Sacred Heart Cathedral but the Irish outscored the Panthers, 30-9, en route to a 74-49 victory as part of the West Coast Classic Jamboree in Brentwood on Tuesday.

“We got up early and then got too comfortable,” Priory coach Buck Matthews said. “It's part of the growing pains. We didn't know how to respond.

The Panthers (6-2) play defending Division I state champion Brea Olinda on Wednesday morning at Los Positas College.

Brea opened a 32-3 lead over Inderkum en route to an easy victory in a later game.
