East Palo Alto girl, 2, died of blunt-force trauma

Mother's boyfriend charged with murder

A 2-year-old East Palo Alto girl died of blunt-force trauma and her mother's boyfriend now faces murder charges in her death, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said this week.

Adair Jeru Enriquez Zevallos, 24, of East Palo Alto, was arraigned in San Mateo County Superior Court on Monday and was charged with murder and assault on a child causing death. He is the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother.

On Nov. 27, officers responded to a residence on the 300 block of East O'Keefe Street on a report that a young girl was in distress and having trouble breathing. Police and paramedics tried to assist the child, who was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. She died a short time later, East Palo Alto police said.

The girl did not have a medical history related to her symptoms and no apparent injuries, but investigators treated the death as suspicious. An autopsy on Nov. 29 revealed evidence of foul play, which led to Zevallos' arrest.

Zevallos remains in custody without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 13 to enter a plea, Wagstaffe said. The child's name has not yet been released.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information about it is urged to contact the East Palo Alto Police Department by contacting Detective Audyama Williams at 650-798-5954. Send an anonymous email to or text to 650-409-6792, or leave an anonymous voice mail at 650-409-6792 or 650-853-8477.

This is so awful. My first instinct would be to wonder why, oh why, a mother would stay with someone who was cruel to her child. I divorced my second husband because he said he was willing to be a stepfather and then was mean, not physically abusive after a year or so. But we don't know all the facts, and maybe this guy only acted out physically the once and the mother had no idea this was going to happen.

This is just so awful to think about, my first thought is where was the mother when this little angle was suffering from her boyfriend abuse.I'm glad they arrested the boyfriend and are charging him with murder. No child should have to die at the hand at someone that was suppost to protect them. My confusion is why haven't they charge the mother with child negligence or other charges too. I believe that both adult should pay for the death of this innocent child.

For those who do not know, this man has never been a individual that would commit such a crime. I have know this man for 10+ years and He has never had a history or anger or drug use. Above all he has always been a man of family and a lover of children. These charges are unbelievavle because it had to be an accident. This man would never harm a child or anyone else for that matter. Appearances are deceiving and I hope the jury will find insider all options before deciding the fate of this man.
