Man crashes truck into wall during police chase

Police searched for suspect in Crescent Park Wednesday

Police conducted a manhunt in the Crescent Park neighborhood in Palo Alto on Wednesday after a man fled an officer and crashed a utility truck into a residential brick wall.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. after a motorist flagged down an East Palo Alto police officer to report that an individual who was driving erratically had hit the victim's car on U.S. Highway 101.

Upon seeing the officer, the man fled in a white utility-style truck with the officer in pursuit. The officer stopped chasing the vehicle, which was traveling west on University Avenue, after he noticed the driver was maneuvering the truck erratically. The officer did not want the truck to crash, East Palo Alto police Commander Jeff Liu said. But that did not stop the reckless driver, who crashed after the officer had stopped the pursuit.

"He crashed the truck on his own anyway," Liu said.

The driver ran off University Avenue and struck the brick wall of a residence on the corner of the 400 block of Marlowe Street. He fled on foot, Liu said.

East Palo Alto and Palo Alto police searched for the man, creating a perimeter between University Avenue, Maple and Marlowe streets. They called a number of residences in the area to alert them to the suspect and searched yards, but the man was not found. Dispatchers described him as a tall, thin man wearing a gray sweater or hoodie. Police are still looking for him, although the containment area has been disbanded.

Liu said that Palo Alto police are processing the truck and California Highway Patrol is taking the accident report. No one was injured.

I hope they find him soon..
