Palo Alto girls tame Wildcats in soccer season opener

Palo Alto's girls soccer season ended all too soon last year as far as the Vikings are concerned.

Despite entering the Central Coast Section Open Division as the No. 7 seed, Paly had Mitty on the ropes in the first round.

The Monarchs advanced on penalty kicks, leaving the Vikings a little bit frustrating.

Skip forward to Palo Alto's season opener on Monday night and things are looking a lot like they did last year, when the Vikings compiled a 16-1-2 overall mark.

The Vikings beat defending Open Division champion Woodside, 3-0, getting goals from Tess Preising, Chloe Japić, and Ally Scheve.

The schedule doesn't get much easier for the Vikings, who play at Gunn on Thursday at 6 p.m. and host defending CCS Division I champion Menlo-Atherton at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Bears knocked the Titans out of last year's CCS playoffs.

Of the Vikings first nine games, seven are against teams that played in the CCS tournament last year, including four that played in the championship game and another that reached the semifinal round.
