Palo Alto student wins art award

Avelyn Jing, age 5, honored by Peace Pals International

Avelyn Jing, a Palo Verde Elementary School kindergartner, has won first prize in her age group in the 2016 Peace Pals International Art Exhibition and Awards.

Jing, 5, portrayed the themes of "may peace prevail on Earth" and "oneness with diversity" by drawing children from varies nationalities dancing together under a rainbow and peace dove, surrounding by flags in hearts.

Jing's mother, Zhen Li, said Jing, who has a passion for art, was inspired by the fun she has dancing and singing with her friends, many of whom hail from diverse backgrounds.

The annual contest is sponsored by Peace Pals International, an organization dedicated to inspiring children ages 5-6 to become peacemakers.

As part of her prize, Jing has been awarded a 6-foot Peace Pole, which her mother says they hope to donate to her school or the city.
