Bears, Knights earn top seeds in Northern California

Menlo-Atherton received the No. 1 seed in Northern California as part the girls state Division I volleyball playoffs, it was announced Sunday.

The Bears (26-5) host Skyline-Oakland (11-6) in the first round at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The teams do not share any common opponents.

M-A lost to Notre Dame-Belmont in the first round of the CCS Open Division playoffs and will be playing their first match in 11 days. All eight teams in the Open Division were re-seeded into the NorCal tournament.

Notre Dame was seeded fourth in the Open Division, while Mitty is the top seed. The Knights lost their first round Open Division match to the Monarchs on Nov. 5.

Menlo School earned the top seed in Division IV, with Sacred Heart Prep getting the third seed.

The Knights (20-8) host Bear River (22-20) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Bruins lost on the Sac-Joaquin Section title match to Ripon in three sets. The teams do not have any common opponents.

The Gators (24-11) are coming off a four-set loss to Monte Vista Christian, the No. 2 seed in DIV and a possible second round opponent for Sacred Heart Prep. They host Bret Harte (25-6) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Palo Alto (23-10) is the No. 12 seed in Division I and travels to Turlock (26-11) for a match Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs and Vikings have both played St. Ignatius, St. Francis and Oak Ridge. Paly lost to all three while Turlock lost to SI, beat the Lancers and went 1-2 against Oak Ridge.

Chelsea Fan is a question mark for the match after rolling her ankle during the loss to the Mustangs.

"It all depends on the speed of recovery," Vikings' Jessica Lee said.
