East Palo Alto landlord accused of trying to force tenants out

An East Palo Alto landlord has been charged with felony destruction of property in an attempt to force his rent-controlled tenants out, according to a police department press release.

Investigators said Nemat Matt Malek Salehi and his son, Auria Malek Salehi, allegedly broke tenants' car windows and destroyed their personal property in order to get the Stanford Garden Apartments tenants to move out so the elder Salehi could increase rents. The apartments are at 1735 Woodland Ave. in East Palo Alto.

During the course of the investigation, which was conducted by East Palo Alto police and the office of the District Attorney of San Mateo County, Auria Malek Salehi contacted a witness and tried to dissuade the person from cooperating with investigators, police said.

Arrest warrants were issued on Sept. 21 for both Salehis, and the two surrendered themselves to the court, police said. The elder Salehi is charged with felony destruction of property. His bail was set for $25,000. The younger Salehi is charged misdemeanor attempting to dissuade a witness from cooperating with the criminal investigation. His bail is also set for $25,000.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cmdr. Jeff Liu at 650-853-5904. Anonymous tips can be emailed to epa@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voicemail to at 650-409-6792 or 650-853-8477.

Please tell me this is not the same guy with the rap sheet for welfare fraud from 2000. How is he allowed to continually break the law?

Give these perps a slap on the wrist the first time and they will just keep committing crimes. The judge should have made an example out of him after the first offenses (which involved stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars).
