Sacred Heart Prep reaches semifinals in boys, girls tournaments


Sacred Heart Prep opened the NorCal girls water polo Invitational with a pair of impressive victories Friday, beating Leland, 9-5, in regulation and Davis, 7-6, in overtime.

The Gators (15-7) are scheduled to meet Miramonte in a semifinal Saturday at 12:20 p.m.

Maddy Johnston and Layla Waters each scored twice in both games. Maddie Pendolino added a pair in the win over Leland. Jane Rakow recorded 20 saves on the day.

Castilleja (14-6) and Gunn (12-8) each dropped their first two games of the tournament.

Madison Lewis scored twice and Georgia Lewis had nine saves in Castilleja's 9-6 loss to Miramonte. Serena Rivera-Korver scored a goal in each game. The Gators lost to Soquel, 10-2, in the second game.

Gunn lost to top-seeded San Ramon Valley, 16-4, and then dropped a 9-8 decision to Las Lomas.

The Titans were scheduled to meet Acalanes and Castilleja was slated to play Clovis North on Saturday morning.

Boys water polo

Larsen Weigle scored six goals to lead Sacred Heart Prep past Coronado, 11-6, to advance into the semifinals of the Memorial Cup tournament at Bellarmine. C.J. Box added a pair of goals.

The Gators (17-5) opened with an 11-6 victory over Los Osos and are scheduled to meet the host Bells at 11:20 a.m. Saturday.
