Out of the postseason picture in 2014 and 2015, the Western New York Flash took the NWSL by storm in 2016, completing a thrilling postseason run with a dramatic win over the Washington Spirit to capture the title.

The Spirit was seconds away from winning in overtime when league MVP Lynn Williams scored to even the score at 2-2 and send the game to a shootout.

The title was the fourth in four different leagues for the Flash, which also won titles in the W-League (2010), WPS (2012) and WPSL Elite (2012) before joining the NWSL in 2013. The Flash reached the final with a team that included Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd.

WNBA Finals

It’s going to be hard to top Game 1 for fantastic finishes, though there’s still plenty of time to try. Alana Beard sank hit a jumper from the side as the clock expired, giving the Los Angeles Sparks a 78-76 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday in game one.

Stanford grad Nneka Ogwumike scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Sparks the host Lynx. Candace Parker added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Wagner senior point guard Kiana Williams committed to Stanford on Saturday.

Williams, who was on an official visit, told Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer shortly after the team’s practice Saturday.

“I think this is the place, Coach,” Williams said she told VanDerveer.
