Menlo, Sacred Heart Prep remain atop WBAL tennis standings


Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep each won a West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division home match Thursday and remained in first and second place, respectively.

The Knights (5-0, 8-6) won their 237th consecutive league match, a streak that dates to 1994, while the Gators (4-1, 10-3) won their fifth straight since losing, 4-3, to Menlo.

Taylor Gould, Georgia Anderson, Elika Eshghi and Kathryn Wilson combined to go 48-8 in singles competition as Menlo topped visiting Castilleja, 7-0.

The doubles teams of Kaitlin Hao-Vivian Liu, Lauren Creamer-Penelope Penfold-Patterson and Charlotte Lee-Ellie Lieberman were a combined 36-8.

Sacred Heart Prep was without two-time defending CCS singles champion Sara Choy for the third consecutive match, though Melina Stravropoulos stepped in and won her third straight at the top of the ladder.

Isa Robinson recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emma Li and extended her winning streak to eight matches a SH Prep topped Harker, 5-2.

Menlo hosts Harker, Sacred Heart Prep visits Crystal Springs Uplands and Pinewood (1-4, 4-9) travels to Castilleja for league matches Tuesday, all at 3:30 p.m.

Julie Owens and Haley Mathews each won their singles match but Pinewood fell, 4-3, to visiting Crystal Springs Uplands.

Girls volleyball

Palo Alto, Menlo-Atherton and Menlo School each earned league victories on Thursday, while Sacred Heart Prep and Castilleja lost to their respective league leaders.

Palo Alto (7-0, 13-6) beat Los Gatos at Gunn, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22, to remain undefeated in SCVAL De Anza Division play while the Bears (8-0, 14-4) knocked off Half Moon Bay, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21, as Jacqueline DiSanto produced 11 kills and 18 digs, Eliza Grover had 12 kills and a .360 hitting percentage, Kiana Sales recorded 10 digs and Chloe Johnson added 12 digs.

Menlo (3-1, 17-5) picked up a 25-8, 25-15, 25-18 victory over visiting Mercy-San Francisco as junior Ashley Dreyer and sophomore Selina Xu each posted 10 kills. Xu added 27 assists.

Sophomore Sianna Houghton contributed 22 digs and eight kills while juniors Kristin Sellers had 17 assists and Caroline Bradley pitched in with 15 digs.

Defending state Division IV champion Notre Dame-Belmont downed Sacred Heart Prep (3-2, 15-7), 25-17, 25-18, 25-15. Cate Desler , Natalie Zimits and Alexa Bartlett combined for 19 kills.

Mercy Burlingame beat Castilleja, 25-9, 25-20, 25-20, in a WBAL Skyline Division match. Anna Friedman and Zannie Whittle combined for nine kills and Elle Kass had 13 digs for the Gators (4-2, 11-9).
