Menlo's Von Schottenstein scores twice in soccer victory


The Menlo College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three matches Saturday, beating visiting Soka University of America, 5-2, in a nonconference match.

The Oaks (5-1-1) took 34 shots against the winless Lions (0-6). Menlo opens conference play Thursday at San Diego Christian. The Oaks are 0-6 all-time against San Diego Christian.

The Oaks jumped out to an early two-goal lead. Rachel McCloskey set up Brittany Squarcia in the 10th minute and Alexis Von Schottenstein scored in the 22nd minute, giving Menlo a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Soka came back to tie the game, getting a huge effort from its goalkeeper Alicia Davis, who finished with 17 saves.

Danielle McCarthy broke the tie after a goal in the 70th minute. McCarthy leads the Oaks with four goals on the season.

Caitlin Sorensen increased the score with a goal in the 76th minute. She was assisted by McCarthy.

Von Schottenstein scored the final goal, her second of the game.
