An elderly man was struck in the neck and killed by an unidentified object while driving north on U.S. Highway 101 in Menlo Park early Friday afternoon, Sept. 16, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses said the man, who appeared to be in his early 80s, was struck by the item when it smashed through his windshield near Willow Road at about 1 p.m., CHP Officer Art Montiel said.
After being struck, the driver collided with the center divide, eventually coming to a stop. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Police advise motorists to take alternate routes as traffic have backed up in the northbound and southbound directions.
The two left lanes of 101 were closed as officials investigated the scene, but reopened shortly after 3 p.m., according to tweets from the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Division.
