The Afghanistan Women's National Football Team (AFFWNT) will take on Palo Alto 98G in a friendly soccer match at Cubberley Field (Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto) on Aug. 31 at 5:3 0pm. Admission is free.
The Afghanistan team was founded in 2007 and is currently coached by Kelly Lindsey, a former defender who played for the United States Women's National team as well as the San Jose CyberRays (WUSA). Kelly is assisted by Haley Carter, a reserve goalkeeper for the WSL's Houston Dash and an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran.
The match will be a part of the AFFWNT's preparation for their participation in the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship to be held in India in November/December.
In order to compete at this tournament, the team is fundraising for travel, training camp and gear expenses. The AFFWNT team will be selling scarves at the match to increase the awareness of their program. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible donation to the AFFWNT program may do so at: AFFWNT.
The Palo Alto SC 98G Green Power competes in the NorCal National Premier League. The team primarily consists of seniors from high schools in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Atherton. They are coached by Kyle Hagenburger.
The Palo Alto Soccer Club (PASC) is a competitive soccer club with over 60 girls and boys teams ranging in age from U8 to U18. PASC is affiliated with the top local and nationwide leagues, such as NorCal, CCSL, CRL, NPL and USSDA.
