Menlo College women open volleyball season with a victory

 

Moea Kekauoha, Sierra Buscher, Bailey Gamez and Monica Hruby each recorded double-doubles and the Menlo College women's volleyball team opened its season with a dramatic, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11, victory over visiting UC Merced Wednesday night.

Maddie Clegg added 14 kills and Hannah Hudson led a strong defensive effort with 35 digs to go with four service aces for the Oaks, who lost their first 13 matches a year ago.

Menlo hosts Oregon Tech at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a nonconference match before heading off to the SXU/TCC tournament in Illinois.

The Oaks were down, 2 sets to 1, before winning the fourth set and taking charge of the fifth set.

Gamez recorded four kills and Clegg added two to help give Menlo an 8-2 advantage opening the fifth set.

UC Merced eventually tied the set at 9 before a pair of kills from Kekauoha helped the Oaks regain the lead for good. Gamez finished the match with a kill.

Kekauoha finished with 12 kills and 16 digs, Buscher added 13 kills and 14 digs, Gamez had 13 kills and 14 digs and Hruby recorded 37 assists and 12 digs.

Jade Rockwood, who shared setting duties with Hruby, added 18 assists.

Menlo recorded 103 digs to UC Merced's 90 during the two hour, 15 minute match.
