Menlo College turns to Jan to drive men's and women's golf teams

Robert Jan was introduced as Menlo College's men's and women's golf coach on Wednesday by Oaks Director of Athletics Keith Spataro.

A Class "A" member of the PGA of America, Jan is well versed as a coach, competitor and golf professional and will bring his experience to Menlo College golf beginning with the 2016-17 season.

"I'm thrilled to have Robert as the head of our golf program at Menlo College," said Spataro. "His experience as a coach and a professional in the golf industry combined with his understanding of the student-athlete experience are perfectly aligned with the values of our department."

A native of Northbrook, Ill., Jan comes to Menlo after a year as coach of the men's golf program at NCAA Division I Chicago State University.

Prior to his stint at Chicago State, Jan served as the head men's and women's golf coach at Ashford University, an NAIA school located in Iowa.

While at Ashford, Jan guided the men's team to a top 25 NAIA ranking in just his second season at the helm.

Focusing on the holistic view of the student-athlete experience, the men's team produced seven Academic All-Americans during his tenure at Ashford and also earned the award of highest team GPA in the NAIA with a 3.87.

Jan has also served as the men's coach at the College of Lake County, which he guided to the 2013 Skyway Conference Championship and tutored two golfers to qualify for the NJCAA National Championship.

Jan most recently directed both the men's and women's golf program at NCAA Division III Knox College in downstate Galesburg, Ill.

Outside of his coaching career, Jan has served as the Golf Operations Director and Head Golf Coach at EDGE Performance Golf in Northbrook since 2010.

He has also spent time as the Director of Golf and Clubhouse Operations at Pheasant Run Resort and Spa (St. Charles, Ill) and worked as Head Golf Pro at Mission Hills Country Club (Northbrook, Ill.)

Jan is a 1992 graduate of Millikin University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.

As a member of the Big Blue golf team, Jan claimed the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) title and two NCAA D-III All-America honors in addition to being named to the Millikin Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.

Coach Jan is also recognized as one of the finest Illinois PGA Club playing professionals as a Radix Cup Team Member six times and also captured the IPGA Club Professional championship.
