Highlighted by trips to Kansas, SMU and the Advocare Invitational in Orlando, the Stanford men's basketball 2016-17 nonconference schedule was unveiled on Tuesday.
The Cardinal, which begins the Jerod Haase era this season, could face six teams who earned a berth in the 2016 NCAA Tournament on the road in Kansas, Miami, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Weber State and Seton Hall.
Highlighting the 12-game nonconference slate is a trip to Lawrence, Kansas, to face 2016 NCAA Final Four participant Kansas on Saturday, Dec. 3. The game will serve as a homecoming for Haase, who starred for the Jayhawks from 1994-97.
Stanford's season tips off more than 6,000 miles away from home in Shanghai, China, as the Cardinal meets Harvard in the Pac-12 China Game.
The game will be contested on Saturday morning in China, with the 15-hour time difference resulting in a Friday (Nov. 11) evening contest in the United States.
Later in November, the Cardinal will compete in the Advocare Invitational at the HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, where it will open play against 2016 NCAA Sweet 16 participant Miami on Thanksgiving (Nov. 24). Also among the eight-team field are four 2016 NCAA Tournament participants Gonzaga, Iowa State, Seton Hall and the Hurricanes.
The final nonconference road game of the season finds the Cardinal in Dallas, Texas, in a Dec. 19 matchup with SMU, which won 25 games a year ago.
Stanford will host six nonconference games at Maples Pavilion in 2016, starting with three contests in a six-day span in the middle of November in Cal State Northridge (Nov. 15), Weber State (Nov. 17) and Colorado State (Nov. 20).
The Cardinal will also host West Coast Conference regular-season champion Saint Mary's (Nov. 30), along with Cal State East Bay (Dec. 16) and Idaho (Dec. 22).
Stanford's Pac-12 Conference slate begins at home with the Arizona schools in the final week of December. Confirmed dates for the conference games and times for the entire 30-game regular-season schedule will be announced in early September once television agreements are finalized.
Stanford will be one of the more experienced teams in the Pac-12 this coming season, with 10 of its top 11 scorers from last year returning.
Among those returning to the lineup are four double-digit scorers from last season in Reid Travis (12.8 ppg), Dorian Pickens (12.3 ppg), Marcus Allen (11.1 ppg) and Michael Humphrey (10.3 ppg). The Cardinal also returns its top rebounder from a year ago in Travis (7.1 rpg).
